Senior School

  • The Harrow Chongqing curriculum provides a framework for our students to develop their knowledge and skills towards educational excellence in life and leadership. The curriculum is knowledge centred and taught through discrete subject areas. Planned curriculum opportunities are identified and brought together through themes for example STEAM, language, leadership, critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Careful consideration has been given towards the sequencing of the curriculum to ensure that knowledge and skills are built upon as the curriculum progresses through Phases in the school ensuring coherence and consistency.
  • Building upon the firm foundations of the Prep Phase, our year 9 curriculum prepares students for the demands of the International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) qualification and is reflected by more specialist subjects being taught.
  • Students study Chinese, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Drama, Computer Science, Music, Physical Education and the Library. Alongside this personal, social and health education PSHE helps support our students’ wellbeing and emotional development as well as providing career pathway guidance including IGCSE option choices. Final IGCSE choices will be collated under the supervision of the House Master/House Mistress and tutors.
  • The Year 9 curriculum is exciting and dynamic with students experiencing new subjects such as Biology, Design Technology, Physics and Chemistry. Students continue to develop their leadership skills, are challenged and stretched academically throughout their courses and are exposed to IGCSE content early.
  • In Year 10 students begin a two-year IGCSE course in their chosen subjects. All students study English and Mathematics and choose at least six other subjects. The IGCSE qualification is accredited by UK examination boards, are excellent preparation for A Levels and are recognised by universities worldwide. Most of the subject IGCSE examinations are sat at the end of Year 11 except for the accelerated programme in Mathematics. Students in this programme sit the Mathematics examination in Year 10 and Additional Mathematics in Year 11.
  • Students study English and Mathematics as core subjects and choose six of the following subjects: Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Chinese, Computing, Design Technology, Drama, Economics, English for Academic Progress, Geography, History, ICT, Music, Physical Education and Physics. We offer further IGCSE programmes of study to students who we feel can meet the demands of these extra qualifications and staffing provision allows.
  • Alongside their IGCSE courses, students study Physical Education and PSHE in continuing to develop their health and well-being as well as receiving age specific careers guidance. In Year 11 students receive 1-1 advice about careers pathways helping them to select their A Level subject choices carefully in consultation with Parents.
  • Students continue to undertake activities that foster academic endeavour. This includes habitual reading, digital literacy, extended project work, debate, public speaking, research, competitions, speakers’ forums, study trips and our Leadership and Service curriculum. Throughout the Senior School, student progress is carefully monitored, and regular feedback given directly to students and to parents via grade cards, written reports and parent consultations.
